They say the fort is empty now.

But some visitors swear that at dusk, a woman still stands at an upstairs window of the Custer House, watching the horizon for men who never came home.

Footsteps overhead when no one’s upstairs. Doors that open on their own. Cold spots that seem to follow you from room to room.

In 1876, an entire column of cavalry rode out of Fort Abraham Lincoln and vanished into the mist.

Some say they never really left.
